Prof. Mekenyan in the Stanford's "World's Top 2% Scientists" list

According to this year’s Stanford University list of “World’s Top 2% scientists" Prof. Ovanes Mekenyan, the Head of Laboratory of Mathematical Chemistry (LMC) at Burgas State University “Prof.  Dr. Assen Zlatarov”, is one of the most influential scientists in the world – in the Top 2% out of over 11 million researches, ranked based on their publication activity and citations.

The ranking, developed by a team led by Prof. John P.A. Ioannidis of Stanford University, uses data from Scopus (Elsevier) and bibliometric indicators to identify scientists with the greatest impact on global science. It highlights the top 2% of influential scientists across 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields. The analysis is based on standardized citation information, excluding self-citations, and includes metrics such as the H-index, Hm-index (adjusted for co-authorship) as well as citation counts based on authorship position. The ranking is divided into two categories — for the year 2024 and for overall career impact.

The LMC, founded by the Burgas-based scientist Prof. Ovanes Mekenyan, brings together forty specialists who achieve significant results in modeling toxicological and environmental effects using so-called QSAR methods. This is accomplished through mathematical models that can predict the physicochemical and biological reactions of substances.

In 2021, Prof. Ovanes Mekenyan received the QSAR Life Achievement Award from the global scientific community as a recognition for his lifetime contribution to the molecular modeling of toxic effects. In 2023 he wasalso granted with the honorary degree Doctor Honoris Causa of Burgas State University, “Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov”.

This year, 91 Bulgarian scientists are included in the ranking. The fact that one of them is part of the academic staff at Burgas State University emphasizes the high level of scientific activity carried out at the University.
